Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Risks, Warning Signs, and Prevention

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious medical condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. Left untreated, DVT can lead to a life-threatening complication called pulmonary embolism, where the clot travels to the lungs. While the condition often develops silently, understanding its risks and symptoms can help save lives.

Common risk factors for DVT include prolonged immobility (such as long flights or bed rest), recent surgery, hormone therapy, pregnancy, smoking, and a personal or family history of clotting disorders. People over the age of 60 or those with chronic venous insufficiency are also at increased risk.

Warning signs of deep vein thrombosis may include swelling in one leg, pain or tenderness, warmth, and reddish or bluish skin discoloration. These symptoms require immediate medical attention, especially if they develop suddenly.

Preventive measures are critical, particularly if you fall into a high-risk group. Staying hydrated, avoiding long periods of immobility, and wearing compression stockings during travel or recovery from surgery can significantly reduce your risk. Regular movement and leg exercises are also key to maintaining healthy blood flow.

At Gauld Vein and Vascular, our team offers risk assessments for DVT and recommends preventative strategies based on your unique lifestyle and health profile. For patients who’ve experienced DVT or are at high risk, we provide long-term management and support.
