Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Minimally Invasive

RFA is considered a minimally invasive procedure because it involves only a needle stick and does not require open surgery. This leads to minimal scarring, less discomfort, and a quicker recovery compared to traditional surgical methods.

Follow Up

Dr. Parikh will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure that the treated veins are healing properly. After the RFA procedure, you will be scheduled for an ultrasound within one week. Additional treatments or complementary therapies may be recommended based on your individual circumstances.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a medical procedure used to treat superficial venous reflux, which is often the cause of leg discomfort or varicose veins.

Information

Purpose of Radiofrequency Ablation

RFA is performed to alleviate symptoms the symptoms of superficial venous insufficiency and can improve the appearance of varicose veins. It is a minimally invasive technique that aims to close off the affected veins, allowing blood to reroute to healthier veins.

Procedure

RFA is performed as an outpatient procedure in our procedure suites at Gauld Vein & Vascular. During RFA, a thin catheter is inserted into the problematic vein through a needle stick. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy to the vein wall, heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. This process is guided by ultrasound imaging for precise placement of the catheter.

Preparation

In most cases, no special preparation is needed for a Duplex Venous Ultrasound. You may be asked to wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your legs. It’s also a good idea to inform the technician if you are currently taking any blood-thinning medications.

Anesthesia

RFA is usually performed under local anesthesia. This means that the area around the incision site as well as along the ablation catheter is numbed during the procedure for your comfort.

Recovery

RFA is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home the same day. You will be advised to wear compression stockings and engage in light walking to aid in healing and improve blood flow. Most individuals can resume normal activities within a day or two, although strenuous exercise may need to be avoided for a week. You will receive a detailed instruction packet with information and expectations for your procedure.

Efficacy of Radiofrequency Ablation

RFA has shown high success rates in closing the abnormal veins and relieving associated symptoms such as pain, swelling, and discomfort. It also provides long-lasting results, improving both cosmetic appearance and overall quality of life. When present, varicose veins may either be addressed at the same time as RFA or at a later date depending on the patient’s individual needs.

Risks & Complications

While RFA is generally safe, there are some potential risks associated with the procedure. These may include temporary bruising, skin numbness, or discomfort at the treatment site. In rare cases, infection, blood clots, or nerve injury may occur.

It’s important to discuss the potential benefits and risks of RFA with your vascular surgeon, as well as any alternative treatment options that may be suitable for your specific condition. At Gauld Vein & Vascular, we provide our highly-specialized diagnostic and treatment services to help you make an informed decision about your vein treatment.
