Purpose of Endovenous Laser Therapy
EVLT is performed to treat superficial venous insufficiency by using laser to generate heat and close off the affected veins. It aims to alleviate symptoms such as pain, swelling, and discomfort, and can help improve the appearance and symptoms associated with varicose veins, as well as improve the overall appearance of the legs.
Procedure
During EVLT, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the refluxing vein through a needle stick. The fiber delivers laser energy to the vein wall, heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. This process is guided by ultrasound imaging to ensure precise placement of the fiber.
Anesthesia
EVLT is typically performed under local anesthesia. This means that the area around the incision site as well as along the laser fiber is numbed during the procedure for your comfort.
Recovery
EVLT is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home the same day. You will be advised to wear compression stockings and engage in light walking to aid in healing and improve blood flow. Most individuals can resume normal activities within a day or two, although strenuous exercise may need to be avoided for a week. You will receive a detailed instruction packet with information and expectations for your procedure.
