What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, and often painful veins close to the skin. They most often occur in the legs and can be a sign of venous insufficiency, or failure of the valves in the veins. For a variety of different reasons, the valves that normally propel blood back to the heart can become incompetent or fail, which allows blood to flow backwards. This backward blood flow is what causes these superficial veins to become engorged and enlarged.
If left untreated, varicose veins may worsen over time and can lead to complications, such as blood clots, skin inflammation and discoloration, and even skin ulceration or bleeding at advanced stages of the disease. Schedule your consultation with Dr. Parikh, our board certified Vascular Surgeon, to seek treatment for your varicose veins and prevent progression of the disease.
